Golden Promises, Harsh Reality — GRS Sold Sabah’s Wealth to Outsiders While Sabahans Suffer

THE statement by Datuk James Ligunjang in Jesselton Times claiming Sabah is “on the road of transformation and growth” is nothing but empty cheerleading for a government that has failed its people. His claim that state revenue will reach RM9–10 billion from 2025 may sound grand, but it is a cruel joke to the ordinary Sabahan still struggling without water, electricity, jobs, or decent schools.

Sabah’s Reality: Poverty Amidst Plenty

Sabah is Malaysia’s poorest state. Nearly 20% of our people live below the poverty line compared to 5.6% nationally. For decades, Sabahans have endured hardship while being told to wait patiently for “progress” that never arrives:

Water: 40% of rural households still lack consistent clean water (UNICEF, 2023).

Electricity: Blackouts occur three times more often than in Peninsular Malaysia.

Healthcare: 1 doctor for every 662 Sabahans — far worse than the national average.

Schools: Thousands of rural children sit in dilapidated classrooms without proper facilities.

If this is “transformation,” then it is transformation in reverse.

Oil, Gas and Land: Outsiders Feast, Sabahans Starve

Sabah produces nearly 60% of Malaysia’s oil and gas, yet still receives only 5% royalty — crumbs from a banquet that belongs to us. Every year, billions flow to Kuala Lumpur and Petronas while GRS leaders clap for “RM10 billion revenue” that barely scratches the surface of what Sabah is owed.

Worse, GRS has betrayed Sabahans by giving away hundreds of thousands of hectares of our land, forests, and mineral concessions to politically connected outsiders. Instead of channeling resources to empower locals, they auction off our heritage for short-term political survival. Our people are left with pollution, poverty, and lost opportunities while outsiders grow rich on Sabah’s wealth.

Sarawak Moves Ahead, Sabah Left Behind

While GRS drowns in slogans, Sarawak quietly pulls far ahead:

State Reserves: Sarawak holds more than RM41 billion in reserves, set to hit RM50 billion next year. Sabah under GRS? Barely RM7–8 billion.

Budgets for Development: In 2025, Sarawak tabled a RM15.8 billion budget, with 69% for development. Sabah? Only RM6.7 billion, with a shameful 81% spent just on operating costs.

Infrastructure & Services: Sarawak builds highways, schools, hospitals, and invests in internet connectivity. Sabahans under GRS are still fetching water with buckets, studying in leaking schools, and suffering endless blackouts.

This is the difference between real leadership and empty slogans.

Enough Lies — Time to Demand the Truth

GRS and its bootlickers want Sabahans to believe in illusions of prosperity. But Sabahans know the truth: our state is rich, but our people are poor because our leaders sold us out.

The people’s demands are clear:

1. Full transparency on how Sabah will actually achieve RM9–10 billion revenue — no more slogans.

2. Real poverty eradication plans with timelines and measurable targets.

3. Fair oil and gas revenue — not 5%, but what Sabah rightfully deserves under MA63.

4. End the sell-out of resources to outsiders. Concessions, land, forests, oil, and minerals must benefit Sabahans, not cronies.

5. Immediate solutions to water, electricity, healthcare, and education crises.

Sabahans are no longer fooled by glossy words and recycled promises. Our mothers still carry buckets of muddy water, our children still study in broken schools, our families still wait in overcrowded hospitals. Enough is enough.

GRS can spin all it wants, but the people of Sabah are awake. We are watching. And we will remember.

Versi Bahasa Malaysia :

Realiti Sabah: Kaya Sumber, Rakyat Miskin

Sarawak Maju, Sabah Ketinggalan

Cukup Tipu Daya — Masa Tuntut Kebenaran

Kita sedang memerhati. Dan kita akan ingat.
