Najib, say religious leaders, must do more than shake hands
with the Holy See. He must resolve the outstanding issues.

PETALING JAYA: The dispute over the term Allah, the seizure of Malay-language bibles and more recently, the controversy surrounding an alleged Christian plot to undermine the status of Islam here have led to tension brewing between the Church and the government.

Amidst these unresolved issues, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak landed in the Vatican for an audience with the Pope yesterday.

Sulaiman Taib returns: Good health and no sign of AIDS

Sulaiman, the fllamboyant younger son of Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud, was spotted in Sabah this week scuba diving with his teenage son at a resort. A Sarawakian who spotted him said he could recognized Taib’s “spoilt-brat” offspring, who appeared to be in high spirits and good health, and certainly not at death’s door as the rumors going around town have implied.

“Adalah lebih berhemat, jika Kerajaan Persekutuan menghantar mereka ke negeri-negeri lain di Malaysia secara purata 125,000 orang PATI bagi setiap negeri terutama bagi masalah kekurangan tenaga buruh atau untuk kepentingan politik..” kata Tan Sri Simon Sipaun, Mantan Naib Presiden SUHAKAM.

Tan Sri Simon Sipaun merupakan rakan lama saya ketika kami sama-sama dalam perkhidmatan kerajaan dan sikap tegasnya tidak berubah sekalipun telah bersara daripada Kerajaan.

Bagi saya, beliau adalah seorang negarawan yang wajar dicontohi oleh lelaki Malaysia kerana sumbangan dan baktinya kepada rakyat Sabah dan kesinambungan perjuangan hak asasi manusia.

Suaranya yang lantang kadangkala tidak disenangi pemerintah seolah tidak sedar kepada siapa beliau bercakap sehingga seringkali dianggap sebagai suara pembangkang sedangkan pada dasarnya beliau menyuarakan suara rakyat yang tertindas.

Malaysia, the Vatican establish diplomatic ties

KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 — Malaysia and the Vatican have agreed to establish formal diplomatic ties to promote mutual friendship and strengthen co-operation between both countries, Wisma Putra announced today.

The announcement came following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s audience with Pope Benedict XVI at the papal summer residence, Castel Gandolfo, outside Rome today. The head of the Roman Catholic Church usually spends the summer outside the church’s capital Vatican City.
