Sabah BN struggling to regain initiative

KOTA KINABALU: If there was one thing that MP Wilfred Bumburing did for the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition when he defected to the opposition in July, it was to force the disparate  BN branch in Tuaran to unite.

With the opposition in the state, seen by the BN as their ‘fixed deposit’, gaining ground,  the parliamentary constituency of Tuaran has always been shaky as could be seen by the surge in support for the opposition in the last election.

There has always been a fear within the ruling coalition that the defection of top Sabah BN leaders to the opposition would have a domino effect around the state.

Nazri: Large number of foreigners in Sabah not a threat

Nazri Aziz
(The Star) - The presence of 889,770 legal and illegal foreigners in Sabah is not a threat to the country or the state's security and order, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz.
He said that while national population growth was 2.5% annually, the growth in Sabah was higher.
"The population growth rate is higher in Sabah compared to Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia for several reasons, including the presence of illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries," he said in response to a question by Datuk Seri Wilfred Mojilip Bumburing (Tuaran) on whether the presence of 800,000 foreigners in Sabah posed a threat to national safety and security.

Secret Malaysian resettlement plan for dam-affected natives exposed

The affected communities have only received information about the conditions of their resettlement through the report leaked to the whistle-blower website Sarawak Report. The withholding of the Resettlement Report goes against all international standards on transparency.

Leaked Resettlement Action Plan for natives to be displaced by Murum dam reveals the Sarawak government’s neglect of basic rights and fair compensation
(MURUM, SARAWAK, MALAYSIA) A report by the Malaysian state government of Sarawak about the resettlement of over 1,500 natives has been leaked just a few months before the planned resettlement due to a mega-dam. The impoundment of the 944 MW Murum dam is meant to start in early 2013 and will flood almost 250km2 of forest and cause the displacement of six Penan and one Kenyah native communities.

STAR Qualified to Contest State and Parliament Seats in PRU-13: SPR

"Kalau Bukan Sekarang, Bila Lagi?"
“STAR Sabah is pleased to clarify that the Party is qualified to contest in PRU-13, both in State DUN and Parliament seats, nationwide as confirmed by the SPR Sabah Director at a meeting with the SPR yesterday.  STAR is also listed in the approved political parties qualified to contest in PRU-13.” announced DatukDr. Jeffrey Kitingan, Chairman of STAR Sabah at a Press Conference held to announce STAR’s stand on the Sabah Land and NCR issue.

The meeting with the State SPR was arranged to seek clarifications from the SPR following the unfounded rumours being spread by other desperate political parties against STAR Sabah following its meteoric rise in support from the people in Sabah and growing base in Sarawak.

STAR: BN Government Planning to Abolish Native Rights

The native customary rights of indigenous people are recognized and are to be protected and have been universally adopted of late by many countries under the United Nations Declaration of Rights of Indigenous People.

The recent statement by the Lands and Surveys Director that NCR does not exist after the enforcement of the Sabah Land Ordinance, 1930 is not unexpected as the present government has failed to resolve NCR problems in the State.

The Director cannot be blamed for being used as the mouthpiece of the BN government and merely echoed the previous statement of the State Attorney General.

Setakat manakah kejujuran bn selepas pecah tanah?

Budget snub a ‘blessing in disguise’

Although there is no Budget cheer for Sabah
and Sarawak, the people in the two states
can now plan for alternative solutions in
the coming general election.
By Luke Rintod of FMT
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah and Sarawak, which have been treated as Barisan Nasional’s “fix-deposit”, have been sidelined in Budget 2013.
But it is a “blessing in disguse” because the people in the two states can now plan for alternative solutions.
It appears that Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, his advisers and the ruling BN are very confident that both states won’t slip away from BN grip at the coming general election.
This explains why they could afford not to deal with the prevailing “touchy” issues in Sabah and Sarawak.

7 fingernail problems not to ignore

Spoon nails
Spoon nails (koilonychia) are soft nails that look scooped out. The depression usually is large enough to hold a drop of liquid. Often, spoon nails are a sign of iron deficiency anemia or a liver condition known as hemochromatosis, in which your body absorbs too much iron from the food you eat. Spoon nails can also be associated with heart disease and hypothyroidism.

Terry's nails
With the condition known as Terry's nails, the tip of each nail has a dark band. Sometimes this can be attributed to aging. In other cases, it can be a sign of a serious underlying condition, such as liver disease, congestive heart failure or diabetes.

No major budget cheer for Sabah, Sarawak

Waiting for vital direct-benefit goodies,Sabahans
and Sarawakians were again left behind in Prime
Minister Najib Tun Razak's budget 2013.
KOTA KINABALU: Instead of lifting the crippling 1980 cabotage policy, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak today announced a price uniformity scheme to neutralise costs differences between consumer products in West and East Malaysia.
The catch however is that the scheme is only applicable in Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) stores in Sabah, Sarawak  and Labuan.
Najib said 57 more stores will be set up throughout Sabah and Sarawak.
Sabah is the second largest state covering 73,997 sq km while Sarawak is sprawling comprising  124,450 km2.

Battle for Tambunan: Pairin unshakable?

Despite views that Joseph Pairin Kitingan
failed as a leader, it is unlikely that
the Kadazandusun community will vote
against him in the 13th general election.
TAMBUNAN: Opposition parties and their candidates are lining up to have another go at toppling Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan from a seat that he has held for over a generation.
Others have tried and failed but the times are changing and the opposition is gaining momentum mostly because of the growing perceptions of corruption in high places and the slow pace of development in the resource-rich state.
Now a veteran of Sabah’s murky politics, Pairin, can expect to be challenged by candidates from State Reform Party (STAR) and PKR, to name two, in the Tambunan state constituency in the coming 13th general election.
The Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president can also expect challenges from several independents for the state seat which he has held for well over three decades since 1976 when he won the seat for Berjaya.
The septuagenarian politician who many say has become irrelevant in the Umno-led Barisan Nasional state government recently announced that he intended to defend his state and (Keningau) parliamentary seats, one more time.

Slighted by Anwar, SAPP out in the cold

By Luke Rintod of FMT
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) appears to have parted ways with Pakatan Rakyat after initially showing signs of building ties with the peninsula-based opposition coalition.

The fallout stems from PKR supremo Anwar Ibrahim informing SAPP president Yong Teck Lee that Pakatan was now bringing in Lajim Ukin and Wilfred Bumburing as his new trusted warlords in Sabah.

That decision was made known last month in a meeting room at a hotel here when Anwar met Yong and Jeffrey Kitingan, the Sabah chapter chairman of Sarawak-based State Reform Party (STAR).

Thousands gather to protest native boy’s death

The drug syabu, widely available in Lawas,
according to Sarawak PKR, has taken the
life of a 19-year-old native.
LAWAS: Several thousands of people arrived from all over Lawas, Limbang and Sabah yesterday to protest the murder of 19-year-old Edwin Singa Pelipus from the Lun Bawang community in Long Lopeng and called for justice to be done.

Edwin was found murdered last Friday evening.

According to the organisers of the protest, two other alleged cases of physical violence and stabbings – both resulted in grievous bodily harm and disability – have occurred in Lawas, from as far back as 2005.

All these incidences were allegedly linked to the syabu drug. Syabu is also known as methamphetamine.

After many lengthy discussions (after all, the client is always right) an employee took the elderly woman to the president's office.

Taib: The man who would be king

By Mariam Mokhtar
Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud is in effect, already king. To his right, sits his “arm-candy” wife. All that is missing from the royal portrait are the jewelled crown, the ermine robes, the coat of arms, sceptre and orb.

Spread before the wannabe king and his consort, is his kingdom – Sarawak – which is both blessed and cursed with an abundance of natural resources; blessed because it has the means to benefit the Sarawak people; cursed because the riches serve to benefit only one man – Taib.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad takes his final bow at the United Nations this week, and he’s likely to go out more like a lion than a lamb.

The global provocateur may be winding up his second and final term as president in dispute with Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and held in low esteem by the Iranian public as Iran’s economy falters under tough international sanctions.

But if his first comments after landing in New York for this week’s UN General Assembly are any indication, Mr. Ahmadinejad can be expected to outrage again when he speaks Wednesday from the UN podium.

‘I will contest’ Pairin walking a tightrope

Joseph Pairin Kitingan, 72, while wanting to scale
back on his politics, is not prepared to risk his
party, PBS, losing in the 13th general election.
KOTA KINABALU: In the interior towns in the state, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and its septuagenarian leader, Joseph Pairin Kitingan, are greeted with either scorn or grudging respect, depending on who you talk to.

Ask Joseph, a youth in Tambunan who declined to give his full name, and he is unequivocal in his answer about the failings of the “huguan siou” or paramount chief of the Kadazandusun community.
“What has he done since becoming deputy chief minister?” he asks as he decries the politics of the ruling Umno-led Barisan Nasional coalition to which Pairin hitched his party some 20 years ago.

SAPP stands by its Sabah IC plan

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) has justified its plan to issue ‘Sabah identity cards’ to bona fide Malaysians in Sabah as the only solution to overcome the illegal distribution of national identity cards to foreigners.

The opposition has insisted there is an urgent need to differentiate Sabahans from the dubious document holders who are on the electoral rolls as voters and have managed to sway past elections in favour of the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition.

Pairin may not defend Keningau seat

By Luke Rintod of FMT
Indications within PBS are that its
president Joseph Pairin Kitingan
is ready to retire but is being
held back by worried party leaders.
TAMBUNAN : It is almost certain now that Sabah’s longest- serving assemblyman and Deputy Chief Minister, Joseph Pairin Kitingan, will not be defending his parliamentary and state seats in the coming 13th general election.

Although Pairin, who is president of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), has in the past said that he was prepared to defend both his Keningau parliamentary and Tambunan state seats, signals from within his PBS indicate otherwise.

Pairin, 72, has been the Tambunan state assemblyman since 1976 when he first won the seat for Berjaya at the age 36. Ten years later in 1986, he started winning the Keningau parliamentary seat.

Sabah BN confident of retaining Kota Belud seats

The State BN says judging from the progress the party
has brought and the sentiments of the people, it can
keep all three and one parliamentary seats.
By Luke Rintod of FMT
KOTA BELUD: Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) is confident of retaining all four seats in the Kota Belud area in the coming general election.

The four seats are the three state constituencies of Tempasuk, Usukan and Kadamaian, and the sole parliamentary seat of Kota Belud. They are currently held by Sabah Umno and its strongest ally Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS).

Chief Minister Musa Aman, who was here for the BN Hari Raya open house celebration on Saturday, said he was happy to see the show of support here led by state Umno deputy chief, Salleh Said Keruak, who is also Umno divisional head for Kota Belud.

September 16th Is Historic But A “Black Day” For Sabah/Sarawak: STAR

“September 16th could have been more than a historic day for Malaysia had the Malaysia Agreement, 1963, the promises, assurances and undertakings by the senior partner to the Federation had been fulfilled but, alas, this was not the case, thus making September 16th as a Black Day for Sabah and Sarawak” said Datuk Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan, Chairman of STAR Sabah in response to the various comments on Malaysia Day.

Sabah’s founding fathers of Malaysia had great hopes of and expectations for Malaysia.  They were even prepared to sacrifice Sabah’s new found independence in favour of a new federation in the hope that this partnership would bring far more (than) benefits, in terms of security, economic prosperity and development without compromising too much of their rights as a sovereign nation.

“Scorpene Never Dies” Candle Light Vigil 25 Sept Support SUARAM

We, a group of youths who have been participating in the Malaysian democratic movement for the past 10 years, are outraged by the government’s persecution of Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM), the best known human rights organization in the country that is always at the front line to defend the people’s fundamental rights.

The malicious allegations against SUARAM clearly are baseless and hold no water. The Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism, Ismail Sabri Yaakob had abused his power to discredit SUARAM while the investigation was still in progress. It indeed is a trial of SUARAM by the media without going through a proper legal process and an infringement of the freedom of association.

Anti-Islam film: This Muslim leader talks sense

The violent consequences of past artistic, literary and cultural aggressions against the sanctity of Islam and the prophet seem not to have taught us any lesson.

The abomination against theism continues unabated. Claiming to be works of literature or the arts, the perpetrators have guised behind the cloak of freedom of speech.

The notoriety against Islam has been littered with the likes of Salman Rushdie's despicable Satanic Verses, through to the ugly Danish cartoons and the latest "film", which has maliciously maligned Prophet Muhammad.

Reading the key to making do without the PTI

Reading is the key to Sabah making do without the PTI.

The Orang Asal -- Murut and Dusun including Kadazan or urban Dusun -- and the other Sabahans like the Bajau, Suluk and Indians/Chinese must take up the reading habit.

They must not go anywhere without a book in hand. One we acquire the reading habit, we will not start yawning and fall asleep the moment we open a book.

STAR: Kuching Declaration Better But Not Good Enough

Singapore’s success should be a wake up call to Malaysia

Greece and illicit money flows

The Greek economy lost 261 billion US$ to crime, corruption and tax evasion from 2003 to 2011.

Greece also experienced massive inflows of illicit money in 2010 and 2011.

This means at least two things, according to Global Financial Integrity:
  1. If it were not for tax havens, Greece would never have needed a bail-out.
  2. The Greek (shadow) economy continues to grow at an increasing rate.
For workers and self-employed people at the bottom of the social hierarchy, these data must come as a shock. Or maybe people will say: we knew that already. But for anyone who still believes in the need and the possibility of social justice, these data are just unacceptable.

Secretary Clinton Delivers Powerful Religion Speech After Middle East Embassy Attacks

By Dana Hughes of ABC OTUS News

Secretary Clinton delivered a powerful and personal speech about religion at an Eid ul-Fitr reception, marking the end of the Muslim holiday of Ramadan. The speech, at times, was a direct response to the attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions in the Middle East, and the deaths of four diplomats at the hands of militants in Libya.

In her remarks, Clinton repeated much of what she's said in the last two days. Namely that the Benghazi attack was carried out by a "small and savage group," and that the United States completely rejects what she called the "inflammable and despicable" anti-Muslim film circulating the Internet. However, Clinton pointed out all religions have faced insults and denigration, but that's no justification for violence. The response to such insults is what separates people of true faith from those who would use religion as an excuse to commit violent acts, she said.

Lajim’s new gambit rattling Sabah PKR

Sabah MPs Wilfred Bumburing and Lajim Ukin’s unusual
terms of ‘joining’ PKR has raised the question and
stoked resentment within state PKR.
They try to keep it as quiet as possible – to subdue the irritations – but Sabah PKR just can’t keep it down. The prevailing discomfort has morphed into serious disagreements and the leaders just can’t keep it behind the curtains anymore.

Since MPs Wilfred M Bumburing (Tuaran) and Lajim Ukin (Beaufort) and later (Senator) Maijol Mahap, “joined” PKR, several serious consequences have surfaced.

First of all, Bumburing and Lajim’s unusual terms of “joining” PKR without becoming actual PKR members have raised the question of their real commitment to PKR.

However, as to date, there is nothing but deafening silence on this matter as there is yet to be any concrete action taken to show that the government is serious in carrying out their promises to the people of Sabah.

Bersih Sabah is demanding explanations for the long delay in the implentation of the RCI.
