DAP meet: Leadership spat buries national issues

The Penang DAP convention yesterday barely discussed any issue of state or national interest, for it was overshadowed by arguments over the spat among the party's top leaders.

Several Indian Malaysian delegates who spoke had to be reined in by security personnel as they touched on "very sensitive" issues that had plagued the party over the past week.

‘Restrictions unjustifiable under global law’

PETALING JAYA: A group of United Nations independent experts in a joint statement warned that the newly-passed Peaceful Assembly Bill in Malaysia may “arbitrarily and disproportionately restrict the right to assemble peacefully.”

The restrictions range from a ban on street protests and a prohibition on non-citizens and citizens under 21 years of age to assemble peacefully, to conditional access for media to public gatherings.

Foreigners join rush for RM500 aid forms

Tawau: Foreigners were among the thousands who turned up to obtain the 1Malaysia People's Assistance (BR1M) forms distributed by the Inland Revenue Board entitling those who qualify for RM500 assistance from the Government.

Police had to be called in to control the situation getting out of hand here.

UNCLE TONY and THE BARMAN

Arriving in a hotel in KL Sentral Uncle Tony went to the bar and asked for a pint of draught Guinness. The barman nodded and said, "That will be one Ringgit please, Uncle Tony."

Somewhat taken aback, Uncle Tony replied, "That's very cheap," and handed over his money.

"Well, we try to stay ahead of the competition", said the
barman. "And we are serving free pints every Wednesday evening from 6 until 8. We have the cheapest draught in Asia"

KOTA KINABALU: Political maverick Jeffrey Kitingan, who has been at the forefront in the fight for Sabah’s absolute rights as set out in the Malaysia Agreement 1963, is alarmed that some powers are being misused by the government.

He views the banning of rights activist Haris Ibrahim from entering the state as a gross abuse of the state’s immigration powers by Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman.
