How UMNO actually remained in power from 1971

There is no reason why SUPP should still remain as a partner of the Barisan Nasional government when the Party itself could not protect its own interest and had no or very little bargaining power within the government itself. After SUPP formed the State government with Parti Bumiputra on Tuesday 7th July, 1970, their left wing then accused the leadership of selling out the Party, which caused their then Party Chairman during the 7th Delegate Conference held on December, 1970 to deny this and said that they joined the government as co-equals, but, how correct was this? We have witness that all these years SUPP’s influence in BN government, both at the State and Federal levels, had not only dwindled, but, also showed that the Party could no more advance and protect the interest of its own Party members and supporters.

KOTA KINABALU: Bersih Sabah stands firm on call to reject appointment of Herman Luping

Bersih Sabah is standing firmly on their recent call to reject the appointment of Tan Sri Herman Luping as one of the commisioners for the recently announced Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI).

In issuing a response to Tan Sri Bernard Dompok’s recent statement which suggested that Bersih Sabah are just trying to discredit the RCI, the members of the group would like to stress that the need for commissioners of integrity is paramount.

RANAU : Today's explanation by the Sabah Water Department Director Ag Mohd Tahir Talip on the water supply problem in four kampungs in Ranau which staged a demonstraion last weekend speaks volume of our doomed condition.

Don't just acknowledge the problem and cite every plans and pledge that could be imagined. Fix the problem fast, treat this no water supply as urgent matter and don't drag this for another election time just to make some more promises to the marginalised natives.

The water authorities together with leaders of the ruling party should go really down on the grounds to examine where the problem lies and carry out some immediate remedy with passion and some seriousness. Don't play with the people's life and sanity.

KUCHING: Some 500 angry villagers with their children from Melikin and nearby longhouses in Serian and Simunjan stormed the Serian police station yesterday, demanding the release of five individuals who were detained on Sunday night for allegedly causing a fire.

The villagers learnt that the five – Sanjan Ambol, 58, Musit Ngawing, 52, Tuai Rumah Nyalu Tampa, 55, Samad Junna, 41, and Singa Unsit, 58, – were to be charged at the Serian district court. All five were villagers from Melikin, Danau Melikin and Ensebang Plaie.

The villagers first went to the Serian district office, but on hearing that they were still being detained at the Serian police station, they rushed there and demanded that the detainees be released immediately.

Both Musa Aman of Sabah and the long-serving Taib Mahmud of Sarawak are reputedly the richest among 13 chief ministers in Malaysia, having reportedly stashed away billions and still actively accumulating wealth and properties both domestic and abroad.

KOTA KINABALU: PAS is preparing itself to receive several Sabah leaders into its fold after the Hari Raya celebrations.

Announcing the party’s preparation for a 5,000-strong gathering here on Sept 1, Sabah PAS Youth chief Lahirul Latigu said spiritual adviser and Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat will be receiving these leaders during the event.

“Tok Guru (Nik Aziz) will be announcing the names of several Sabah leaders who will be joining PAS. He will announce the names at a special gathering on Sept 1.

KOTA KINABALU: A Barisan Nasional MP from Sabah has joined the chorus of criticism against the state government led by Chief Minister Musa Aman for failing to provide piped water to scores of villages in the interior of the state.

Ranau MP Siringan Gubat said villagers in his constituency have been relying on dirty water for their domestic use.

Speaking after a protest last week by some 60-odd villagers, Gubat said: “The people are relying on the water supply from the state-owned agency Rural Development Corporation (KPD) which is only meant for farming. This water is not fit for human consumption.”

KUALA LUMPUR: Hindraf Makkal Sakthi, which prides itself on being a hydra-like ad hoc apolitical human rights movement straddling the divide in Peninsular Malaysia, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Kuala Lumpur on Tues 14 Aug, 2012 with veteran activists in Sabah and Sarawak. The MOU formalizes a long-running informal and ad hoc arrangement, a strategic partnership, uniquely spanning both sides of the South China Sea.

The MOU, being kept for the moment under wraps as a document, will take effect on Sept 16, the day Malaya, Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak ostensibly came together in 1963 as equal partners without referendum and without a genuine written Constitution to form the new Federation of Malaysia.

We demand that Tan Sri Herman Luping be disqualified and immediately removed as a panel member due to his highly publicized corruption case in the 1980's during which he was accused with soliciting RM1million from timber tycoon Victor Wong Chet Sing on April 25th 1985. During this time he was the State Attorney General and a legal advisor of a political party. We find him simply not clean so appointment of a panel of low integrity is a face palm to the government."

Andrew stressed further that "Sabahans have been fooled for far too long by misleaders of low integrity. It's time that the government step up with real and impactful actions and solutions to solidify the promises they have made to the people in the name of justice & fairness for all. Sabahans should not settle for less in the Terms of Reference (TOR) of RCI and therefore must exercise their Constitution Rights to freedom of expression."

Najib finally announces terms and reference for RCI on illegal immigrants in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in announcing the details and terms of reference on the setting up of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on Illegal Immigrants in Sabah here Saturday, said it would be given six months to complete its investigation on the influx of illegal immigrants in Sabah.

He said the six months period would begin from the date the instrument of appointments were issued to the RCI chairman and panel members and that the report would be submitted to Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Ranau staged peaceful demo on no water supply

RANAU : A group of 60 representatives from four kampungs in Ranau today staged a 15-minute sit-in peaceful demonstration near here in a protest of what they called the ruling party's "Janji Tak Ditepati" or "false promise" on providing water supply to them.

They claimed the kampung folks had been without supply of clean water for years and things got messier as the only iron water tank that used to store water from Mesilau river has rusted with knee's deep mud and rust inside it, having never been maintained or cleaned.

KOTA KINABALU: The State Reform Party (Star) has challenged local parties in Sabah to leave the Barisan Nasional (BN) in the wake of former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s widely-reported blog posting on Wednesday this week that “illegal immigrants who have stayed long in Sabah are entitled to citizenship especially when they can speak Bahasa Malaysia”.

He also called for the removal of illegal immigrants holding MyKads meant for citizens by operation of law from the electoral rolls.

KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah MP today lashed out at the Umno-led federal government for irresponsibly granting foreigners residing in Sabah citizenship merely because they can speak the language and had been in the state for a number of years.

Sepangar MP Eric Majimbun, who is Sabah Progressive Party deputy president, said the ruling coalition’s real agenda in granting citizenship to foreigners was to hang on to power using their votes of gratitude.

KOTA KINABALU: Amateurs in Sabah’s political arena were the cause of the state losing its autonomous rights and privileges when it joined joined Singapore, Sarawak and Malaya to form Malaysia in 1963, local opposition politician Jeffrey Kitingan charged.

He said Sabahans are now paying the price due to poorly educated and inexperienced founding leaders having been selected to negotiate Sabah’s entry into the federation as a founding member.

We had a half-year of rallies in mid-2007, starting with 600 people from the Malaysian Trades Union Congress demonstrating outside the Prime Minister’s office against government refusal to initiate minimum wage legislation.

Several union demonstrations were held in the following weeks. Soon after the country became 50 years old on August 31 that year, the big rallies really began. It started with the Malaysian Bar Council, of which you were the president then, organising the so-called Walk for Justice on September 26. About 2,000 people took part.

KUCHING: Controversial Meluan assemblyman Wong Judat has finally resigned from his party Sarawak Progressive Democratc Party (SPDP), a Barisan Nasional component party, after months of speculation.

He said yesterday he resigned because of Julau MP and Parti Rakyat Sarawak (another BN ally) vice-president Joseph Salang’s ‘stubborn’ insistence on defending his seat in the next parlaimentary polls.

But some political observers here are of the view that Salang is “not the real reason” behind Judat’s decision to quit SPDP.

PETALING JAYA: The relationship between the Churches and the federal government has been nothing short of tensed as numerous contentious issues have placed both at loggerheads.

Though unspoken, it is an open secret that the faithfuls of the various Christian denominations and their leaders are seething in silent anger.

The grapevine claims that while these shepherds appear to be apolitical in public for obvious reasons, they however whisperotherwise in the ears of their respective flocks behind closed doors.

It has always been said that apart from the devout Christians, the eyes and ears of the government are also present during services in certain Churches to keep track of the subversive elements there.

Well, in case you have not realised, Yang Berhormat, not only same-sex marriages, as you said, erode the family institution. Sex outside marriage does as well. And there are many more Malaysians bonking outside marriage than Malaysians entering same-sex marriages. So why aren’t you appealing to all Malaysians to ‘protest en masse’ regarding this? This is a bigger problem than same-sex marriages.

Commenting on the recent wedding reception here of Malaysian gay Christian priest, Ngeo Boon Lin and his musical producer partner, Phineas Newborn III, who were married in New York last year, he said that even the Christians in the country prohibited such practices.

Every morning as I walk down my street I see the same homeless Chinese man sleeping on asphalt. Just around the corner there’s a Malay guy lying on his back, oblivious to the office workers walking by the sidewalk that has become his makeshift bedroom since even before I moved downtown five years ago. I walk a little further and I see a dreadlocked Indian lady getting up at a bus stop to make her way elsewhere.

Come evening time, as I am strolling back home through the neighboring vicinity, I see an Indian man driving a 2010 Jaguar XJ. Mr Lee had to wait for a big shot Malay broad to board the chauffeur-driven car before he could proceed to wherever the party is at.

Chief executive Shamsul Azhar Abbas took to the stage and declared that the government's policy of subsidizing fuel was plain wrong. A murmur ran through the crowd - his boss, Prime Minister Najib Razak, was sitting in the front row.

Moments later, Najib went to the podium himself to remind everybody that the subsidies - for which Petronas foots the bill - have "social-economic objectives."

KOTA KINABALU : Two Sabahans of the Sabah chapter of Malaysians for Free and Fair Elections (MAFREL) will be in Manila for four days starting tomorrow, holding discussions and sharing notes with the world-renown NAMFREL (National Citizen's for Free Election), in relation to the coming Malaysian general election.

Chairman of Gindol Initiative for Civil Society Borneo, Mr Kanul Gindol, and myself, both as MAFREL volunteers, would learn from the Philippines' experience in election observatory works of which NAMFREL is known to have been doing since early 1980's soon after it was incepted in 1983.

PASADENA, California (Reuters) - NASA's Mars science rover Curiosity performed a daredevil descent through pink Martian skies late on Sunday to clinch an historic landing inside an ancient crater, ready to search for signs the Red Planet may once have harbored key ingredients for life.

Mission controllers burst into applause and cheers as they received signals confirming that the car-sized rover had survived a perilous seven-minute descent NASA called the most elaborate and difficult feat in the annals of robotic spaceflight.

Once again it is the season for political frogs to jump in the Wild Wild East. To be fair to these politicians, they don’t see themselves as “political amphibians”.

If you know Lajim, you would know that he is not that smart with smartphone. Earlier this year, he joked that he owned three smartphones – one for personal use, one for Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and one for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. And when one of the phones rang, he did not know who was calling him – his wife, Najib or Anwar.

KUCHING: Native landowners of Kampung Danau, Melikin, Serian are preparing to sue an oil palm company which is allegedly using gangsters to threaten them and prevent them from entering their gardens and farms.

The natives have instructed lawyer Baru Bian to file a legal suit against United Teamtrade Sdn Bhd for asking them to pay for access into their own lands.

“We will file the suit very soon, maybe next week against the oil palm company,” said Bian.

According to Bian, the natives received a letter signed by one Ha Haw Kong, who is a director of United Teamtrade Sdn Bhd, claiming that the lands now belonged to the company as they had been awarded provisional leases and that villagers wanting to enter the land must now pay an accessibility fee.

KUCHING: A ruckus at an Election Commission briefing has left the opposition here seething.

Shocked state PKR leaders who attended the briefing said Assistant Minister of Youth Development Abdul Karim Hamzah had behaved “like a gangster” towards the party’s Senadin candidate Dr Michael Teo.

According to one of the leaders who declined to be named, during the question and answer session, Teo had claimed that the postal votes cast by uniformed personnel could be manipulated if the ballot boxes were not placed at the tallying centres after voting process. Teo also alleged that it might lead to vote tampering.

“Karim became angry and told Teo to stop asking stupid questions. Teo then replied that he was not talking to him but to the Election Commission chairman and other officials.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah opposition leader Jeffrey Kitingan has likened Lajim Ukin and Wilfred Bumburing’s decision to align themselves with PKR instead of state-based parties to that of “subconsciously perpetuating a subservient political mentality” in Sabah.

“I would have preferred them to be with me in State Reform Party (STAR) as it is better for us Sabahan leaders to be in our own strength to correct the situation we are in,” he said here.

Bumburing and Lajim had on July 29 officially aligned themselves with Pakatan Rakyat, especially with PKR, in a move many see as a selfish effort to prolong their respective stay in politics.

Both leaders were openly known to be on Barisan Nasional’s drop-list as candidates in the impending general election. Lajim had openly accused Sabah Umno head and Chief Minister Musa Aman of dropping him.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Arab countries pushed ahead Wednesday with a symbolic U.N. General Assembly resolution that tells Syrian President Bashar Assad to resign and turn over power to a transitional government. It also demands that the Syrian army stop its shelling and helicopter attacks and withdraw to its barracks. A vote is set for Friday morning.

The draft resolution circulated up through Wednesday takes a swipe at Russia and China by "deploring the Security Council failure" to act. Moscow and Beijing have used their veto in the smaller, more powerful Council three times to kill resolutions that could have opened the door to sanctions on Syria.

KUALA LUMPUR : As Malaysia faces a looming general election, Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman, an important ally of embattled Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, is increasingly being engulfed with questions of integrity and leadership issues.

Musa already lost two Members of Parliament from Sabah last week, and now the ongoing investigations on his own involvement in allegedly money-laundering activities are increasingly affecting his integrity and performance as leader of the poverty-stricken Sabah.

Observers both in Kota Kinabalu and here are of the opinion that the embattled Sabah kingpin would have no avenue to redeem his reputation as more in Sabah are joining the opposition and that incriminating data on the money laundering kept pouring out in websites, blogs and leaflets.

The parallel investigations going on in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Switzerland on the money-laundering case have proven to be too much to Musa and the state leadership.

KOTA KINABALU: Beaufort MP Lajim Ukin quit the Barisan Nasional to join Pakatan Rakyat as he believes that the opposition front will topple the federal as well as Sabah state government in the 13th general election, a senior ruling coalition leader said.

“Lajim ditched Umno for Pakatan to be able to contest Beaufort and likely a state seat.

“Winning the MP seat will pave the way for him to be a minister in a Pakatan federal government or having a state seat, a ticket to be Sabah chief minister,” Sabah Umno liaison deputy chief Salleh Said Keruak said today.

Salah seorang pegawai tertinggi bank HSBC telah meletak jawatan secara sukarela semalam, sambil mengumumkan bahawa bank itu telah membisu seribu bahasa terhadap kegiatan memindahkan wang sebanyak $38 trillion, yang melibatkan Ketua Menteri Sabah, Musa Aman. Laporan dari pihak Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM) mengenai wang sogokan pembalakan (suatu kes yang, menurut Najib Razak, boleh disabitkan dengan Musa Aman) mengandungi banyak maklumat mengenai penglibatan HSBC memproses berjuta-juta ringgit yang akhirnya menjurus ke dalam akaun-akaun bank milik Musa Aman.

Begitu juga, Sarawak Report telah mendedahkan maklumat terperinci mengenai siri-siri akaun HSBC yang dikaitkan dengan Musa Aman, yang akhirnya terpaksa ditutup dalam tahun 2006 dahulu.

Will banks recognise strata titles for longhouses?

KUCHING: The latest move by the state government to issue two longhouse with strata titles has brought on many unanswered questions, key among them is whether or not the commercial banks will recognise these ‘titles’ for loans and mortages and if this latest exercise was yet another political bid to mislead natives into an “illusory” sense of security.

A senior native customary right (NCR) lawyer here, Baru Bian said Housing Minister Abang Johari Tun Openg’s bid to issue strata titles for longhouses was also in contradiction with the statement made by the Land and Survey Department.

The Sabah government is yet to fully respond to the
people’s grievances on NCR land grabs.

PINANGAH: State Reform Party (STAR) has warned that the increasing number of land disputes in Sabah is showing signs of turning ugly and may eventually lead to violence if the government continues to turn a blind eye on them.

In his speech at a land rights demonstration here recently, Sabah STAR chairman Jeffrey Kitingan expressed his disappointment that the state government has been neglecting the people despite the fact that the problem has been happening for many years.

TUARAN: Former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim today asked Sabahans to save Sabah and Malaysia by voting out the Umno-led Barisan Nasional at the coming general election.

KOTA KINABALU: As Wilfred Mojilip Bumburing and Lajim Ukin prepare to render their speeches for their respective functions today, political analysts here have a mix reading of their decision to leave the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition for the opposition.

It is debatable whether their withdrawal is an act of betrayal of people’s mandate or a vote of no confidence on their former bosses.

For the record, today, July 29, the two Sabah BN parliamentarians are ‘officially’ set to throw their support for Pakatan Rakyat, witnessed by its leader Anwar Ibrahim.

KOTA KINABALU: If there is one building that almost every Sabahan can easily identify with, it is the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Kota Kinabalu.

The iconic QEH was originally built at the 1.5th mile Penampang Road in 1957 by the British. This was the time when Sabah was still known as British North Borneo. It was then just a cluster of single and double storey blocks.

In 1981, an important addition to QEH, a RM20 million eight-storey block was completed.

STAR's Sabah Information Chief, Edward Linggu

KOTA KINABALU: Barisan Nasional MP Wilfred Bumburing’s speech today potentially to announce his exit from his party Upko and the ruling coalition will be closely monitored by Kadazandusun leaders in the opposition.

Said State Reform Party (STAR) information chief Edward Linggu: “We trust that he will also leave behind all his government posts to show his sincerity as the people will view him with suspicion if he leaves with one leg still inside the BN state government.”
