How UMNO actually remained in power from 1971

By Voon Lee Shan

There is no reason why SUPP should still remain as a partner of the Barisan Nasional government when the Party itself could not protect its own interest and had no or very little bargaining power within the government itself. After SUPP formed the State government with Parti Bumiputra on Tuesday 7th July, 1970, their left wing then accused the leadership of selling out the Party, which caused their then Party Chairman during the 7th Delegate Conference held on December, 1970 to deny this and said that they joined the government as co-equals, but, how correct was this? We have witness that all these years SUPP’s influence in BN government, both at the State and Federal levels, had not only dwindled, but, also showed that the Party could no more advance and protect the interest of its own Party members and supporters.

Who really is Lajim’s ‘tuan’?

Has Sabah MP Lajim Ukin really defected or is this all
just another shadow play engineered by both
Najib Tun Razak and Anwar Ibrahim?
KOTA KINABALU: Whatever the game Umno chief Najib Tun Razak and PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim are playing in Sabah, it is going to be fiery and those who will feel the heat at the ballot boxes are the locals whose minds are being toyed with, spirits tested and loyalties horse-traded.
The reverberations from Barisan Nasional MPs Lajim Ukin and Wilfred Bumburing’s defections – if indeed they are defections – are hitting hard at the walls of Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman and his counterpart in Sarawak Taib Mahmud.
Cut from the same cloth and soaked in Mahathir-mentored politics, neither Najib nor Anwar seems to really care about Sabahans or Sarawakians.

Bumburing, Lajim exit plan aborted again

By Raymond Tombung of FMT
Potential defectors Wilfred Bumburing and Lajim Ukin are
'playing tarik tali' with the BN leadership in view of
the current political scenario in Sabah.
KOTA KINABALU: Plans to enable Upko deputy president Wilfred Mojilip Bumburing and Umno warlord Lajim Ukin to announce their exit from Barisan Nasional have been aborted.

Senior PKR leaders and the organising officials of the gatherings on July 15 in Beaufort (for Lajim) and in Tuaran (for Bumburing) have confirmed that the planned jump by Bumburing and Lajim has been “suddenly aborted, or postponed”.

The development has heightened curiosity amongst observers.

Senior PKR leaders, who are disheartened by the turn of events, were given varied reasons for the cancellation of Bumburing’s formal announcement to ditch BN.

Sabah MPs to quit BN this week?

Will Upko's Wilfred Bumburing and Umno's Lajim Ukin
announce their exit from their respective
parties on July 15?
By Joseph Bingkasan of FMT
KOTA KINABALU: National coalition MPs Wilfred Bumburing and Lajim Ukin are expected to announce their pullout from their respective parties during gatherings in Tuaran and Beaufort, respectively on June 15.
PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim will be attending both functions where the two are expected to become “independent” MPs.
Bumburing who is Tuaran MP will make his much awaited announcement in Tuaran in the morning while in the afternoon Beaufort MP Lajim is to formalise his departure from the BN at his hometown in Beaufort.
Although both leaders would be declaring that they are leaving the government coalition parties in the presence of Anwar, they are not expected to join either PKR or other opposition Pakatan Rakyat component members.

Political frogs: Jeffrey under attack

By Luke Rintod of FMT
KOTA KINABALU : State Reform Party (STAR) Sabah chairman Jeffrey Kitingan’s statement that “all Sabah politicians are frogs” in Bingkor last Sunday seems to have poked right into the hornet’s nest.

Politicians across the divide and coffeeshops are abuzz with arguments over who is or is not a “frog” in Sabah.

A barrage of defensive attacks against Kitingan by Sabah Barisan Nasional leaders made the local newspapers today, with vehement denials that Chief Minister Musa Aman and his deputy Joseph Pairin Kitingan ever were “frogs”, a term often used to demean politicians who ‘hopped’ from party to party.

June 10 ‘victory’ for Lajim-Anwar?

By Luke Rintod of FMT
KOTA KINABALU: Lajim Ukin, the influential Umno warlord in the south-interior of Sabah, is said to be “definitely” ditching the party to join not the Sabah People’s Front (SPF) as rumoured, but PKR.

Reliable insiders claimed that the Umno supreme council member and MP for Beaufort is preparing for a June 10 exit and that Pakatan Rakyat coalition de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim himself would fly to Sabah to receive not only Lajim but also scores of other Sabah Umno and United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation leaders.

Nizar becomes uninvited guest at Umno ceramah

An Umno ceramah in Kampar, Perak last night witnessed an unusual twist when the main target of the Pakatan Rakyat bashing session - Nizar Jamaluddin - appeared and sat with several Umno leaders.

Nizar, the former Perak menteri besar and most recognisable face of Perak Pakatan, told Malaysiakini today that that the crowd looked rather astonished when he arrived.

Umno ‘medicine’ killing Sabah, says Star

KOTA KINABALU: The State Reform Party (Star) is no longer amused by "the gross exaggerations and inaccuracies" continually being peddled by the ruling Umno-led Barisan Nasional (BN) in Sabah in the run-up to the forthcoming 13th General Election.

The latest statement from Umno which has irked the Borneo-based national party is one from Chief Minister Musa Aman. The Sabah leader claimed on Tues that the opposition, unlike BN, cannot offer the right medicine for Sabah. He claimed "numerous achievements" in the state under the BN.

‘Umno tore apart my father’s legacy’

By Luke Rintod of FMT
KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah governor and chief minister Tun Mustapha Harun’s son has accused Umno of betraying his father’s trust and tearing apart his legacy.

Badaruddin Tun Mustapha said it was ironical that Umno, the party that his father had helped enter into Sabah politics, had plundered the state and reduced its immense wealth and power to a few handouts from the federal government.

‘Save Sabah, if you want Malaysia’

By Raymond Tombung
Is Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak 'naturally' happy with
Umno-Barisan Nasional in Sabah?
KOTA KINABALU: If Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak is even remotely committed to ensuring Malaysia remains with the Barisan Nasional coalition, then he must immediately restore the rights and autonomy of Sabah.

According to political maverick Dr Jeffrey Kitingan to save Sabah is to save Malaysia.

He said it was pointless talking about the being ‘committed’ to the future if the Borneo state continued to be ignored and sidelined.

Sabah duo on the run

KUALA LUMPUR: A 41-year-old Sabah politician, who is a Datuk and an Umno division assistant chief, has fled the state after learning that his office was raided over false claims involving a RM43mil contract for mechanical and electrical maintenance work with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

A department director at the university is also being investigated and his office was raided as well by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers.

He is also said to have fled the state.

Sources said the two men had allegedly made false claims amounting to millions of ringgit although no work was done since the contract was awarded 36 months ago.

UBF: Political Ploy By Sabah BN On RCI To Garner Votes Only

By Edward Linggu
Edward Linggu
“Sabahans and patriotic Sabahan leaders need to understand the ploy of Sabah BN led by UMNO, PBS and UPKO on the recent announcement by UMNO Sabah that UMNO Sabah has no objections to the setting up of the RCI on illegal immigrants issue. The play-acting continued with UPKO and PBS rushing to “angkat” their political bosses by heaping praise on UMNO’s statement of no objections” said Edward Linggu, Campaign Director of UBF.

While it is to be complimented the statement that UMNO Sabah has no objections to the RCI, it has to seen in the light of growing ground-swell amongst the people in Sabah in support of the RCI including many Muslim NGOs in recent times as well as the backlash against UMNO and Sabah BN in the forthcoming general elections due anytime soon.

Principles beat personalities

I don’t really blame all those people who feel enraged by the apparent defection of erstwhile pro-democracy blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin to the Umno/BN or at least anti-PKR ranks.

raja petra Live telecast of the MCLM Forum in LondonBut I feel that RPK’s rank betrayal of his former followers and fans is a blessing in disguise: a timely lesson in the fact that we can count on nobody to save us but ourselves.

Shahrizat: Tell me which Umno leader is not corrupted?

We are all corrupted!
Amid signs that Prime Minister Najib Razak's Umno party was fast unraveling, hit by massive graft and infighting amongst its top leadership, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has announced that a special team would be formed to investigate claims that Umno minister Shahrizat Jalil's family had squandered public funds allocated to the RM250 million NFC cattle livestock project on personal items and luxurious assets.

However, instead of appeasing public anger, all eyes are now on the drama at play in Umno. While Shahrizat has hinted she was ready to quit, it is unlikely that she will allow herself to be railroaded or be made an easy scapegoat of by her own party mates.

UMNO and Population Engineering

 By Hussein Abd Hamid

Since 1957 UMNO has effectively carried out the population engineering of our country to ensure its long-term survival by creating the myth of a two pronged “Ketuanan Melayu”. “Ketuanan Melayu” for the Malay masses who are lull into a feeling of being superior over the non-Malays because of their numbers and “Ketuanan Melayu” for the UMNO Malay political elites through the accumulation of massive material wealth for themselves and their cronies. And while UMNO has failed by almost any measure you chose to gauge them – good governance or morality – without question they have succeeded too well in the engineering of the population of this country of ours.

‘Not much difference between DAP and Umno’

United Borneo Front president Jeffrey Kitingan also warns
Sabahans to beware of Barisan Nasional which is bent on
moving towards extremism to perpetuate its hold on power.
KOTA KINABALU: Peninsular-based DAP is bullying local opposition Sabah Progressive party (SAPP) just like how they (including PKR) thumbed Sarawak Nasional Party (SNAP) in the runup to the polls on April 16, said United Borneo Front president Jeffrey Kitingan.

According to Jeffrey, DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang had started on a wrong footing in Sabah with his arrogant attitude and by pitting local (opposition) parties against each other.

Is war brewing in central Umno?

By Daniel John Jambun
Daniel John Jambun
We know that the state Umno leadership is not at its most harmonious. There is factionalism as confirmed recently by sharp criticism by one group against another group. Even government policies have been questioned by Umno’s own leaders. The Chief Minister himself had advised state leaders to avoid factionalism because it would not be good for the state-level Umno.

It has also been noticed that the component members of the state BN had on many occasions raised the voices against Umno, including the recent outburst by Sebatik Island PBS leaders who claimed to have been sidelined by Umno on that island. But while this has become a common story at the state level, there are now reports of problems creeping up at the highest level in central Umno. Datuk Khairy Jamaluddin, as the Umno Youth Chief, had been critical of some decisions by his party’s decisions, including the arrest of the six leaders of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM).

Rosmah factor in Sabah Umno

In Sabah Umno, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's wife Rosmah Mansor,
strangely enough, seems to be an important factor in the battle between
party vice-president Shafie Apdal and Chief Minister Musa Aman.
TAWAU: Umno president Najib Tun Razak is a worried man and much afraid of his own shadow and, if rumours are to be believed, his wife’s clout within the party.

Within Umno there are three groups of “intelligentsia” – two official and one unofficial. Each group has been turning out their own reports.

But of interest to Sabah is the group which believes that in order for Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) to become a “better and reformed” party, it should be “dethroned” first.

“A dethroned Umno and BN can make a stronger comeback in the 14th general election… There will be better unity and appreciation of each other,” said a veteran Umno insider.

Sabah Umno has forgotten Usno’s sacrifice

Former Usno members, unhappy with Umno's short memory, are seeking
to reactivate their party in time for the 13th general election.
KOTA KINABALU: United Sabah New Organisation (Usno) have given the Registrar of Societies (ROS) and the Home Ministry 14 days to decide on the party’s application to be registered.

According to protem president Badaruddin Tun Mustapha, Usno had submitted its application to ROS Sabah on Oct 26 last year.

He said ROS Sabah had, when asked, told them that the file was now in Putrajaya.

Badaruddin said when protem vice president Abdullah Sani Abdul Salleh checked with ROS on June 28 this year, Abdullah was told that the file was now with the Home Ministry.

Fedup with the runaround, Badaruddin said they were giving the ROS and Home Ministry 14 days to respond to their official letter requesting an answer to the application.

“Failing this, our next course of action would be to ask for the Yang diPertuan Agong to step in.

“In this respect, Usno members will be handing a memorandum to the King through the Sabah Head of State,” he told a press conference in Beverly Hotel here yesterday.

Badaruddin said Usno’s protem committee during its meeting on Monday had also decided to urge the Barisan Nasional government to be transparent in its action against Usno, which he said was the party that gained independence for Sabah.

Ungrateful Umno

He said the BN government should be fair to Sabahans and allow former Usno members to reactivate the party, just like those in Peninsular Malaysia such as the Makkal Sakti, which only took about 60 days to be approved.

If the party failed to be registered by the 13th general election, Badaruddin said Usno will find other ways to use their own symbol and party name to contest.

Badaruddin, who is former Chief Minister Tun Mustapha Harun’s fourth son, said the new Usno is a party for all Malaysians unlike its predecessor.

According to him, the decision to revive the party with the same acronym of the United Sabah National Organisation (Usno) that was founded by his father was in response to the members displeasure over the non-approval of Club Usno, which they applied to be registered as an NGOs in 2006.

Badaruddin, 51, claims that the number of Club Usno members has grown to 100,000 throughout Sabah and that most of the old Usno members, particularly in the East Coast had never joined Umno.

“Usno is Usno and Umno is Umno but we are disappointed that Umno has forgotten about Usno, which brought them to Sabah,” he said of the deal which his father made that allowed the peninsula-based party to spread its wing to Sabah in 1994/1995.

Asked how confident he was that the Home Ministry would approve their application, he said: “The hope is thin but we are confident.

“If registered, Usno plans to contest all 60 state seats in the coming general election.”

Challenging Umno

On whether Usno would be aligned to BN or opposition or perhaps form a pact, he said: “We’ll cross the bridge when we get there”.

“In politics our door is always open,” said Badaruddin, who had contested in 1994 in Usukan for the PBS Plus (a pact between Usno and Parti Bersatu Sabah).

If registered as a party, Usno is expected to put up a strong challenge against Umno and other state political parties in the general elections.

“I remember a deputy chief minister said a few weeks ago that if you want to make noise, contest in the general election then we can tell who is greater.

“So I asked Yahya Hussin (deputy CM) please help us to approve our party then we can know whether Umno can beat Usno or not,” he said.

Nearly 50 members representing the various constituencies in Sabah attended the function together with some of the 13 protem committee members.

The old Usno was disbanded by Tun Mustapha following the entry of Umno into Sabah with most of its members being absorbed into the party.
